Writing for Children

The magical thing about writing for kids is that you get to meet the child still alive inside you.

Do you remember the smell of damp earth after rain? Being afraid of the dark? Can you recapture the feeling of how tall everybody was around you? What about the lump in your throat when a teacher raised her voice? Or the relief when you got lost and a kind grown-up helped you reunite with a parent?

Writing For Children: Voice, Story and Structure will show you how to unlock that storehouse of impressions and experiences where fresh stories wait on every shelf. Weekly assignments guide you in blending memory and imagination while teaching specific skills.

You will learn how to write a children’s book by:

  • Building structures that carry strong stories;
  • Tapping into a fresh, authentic voice relevant to children or young adults;
  • Modeling on traditional children’s book themes (fantasy writing, circle stories, accumulation tales, transformation stories).

The secret ingredient of writing a children’s book is speaking directly to the child. Recapture the wonder of discovery as the authentic voice of your writer-self becomes reacquainted with your authentic child-self.

Note: Students and teacher use a conference call format to exchange feedback during this course.

Helena’s thoughtful, well-developed exercises sent me straight to my own childhood where I discovered a profound wealth of experience. Under her gentle guidance, I learned to craft with heart and soul, not just brain — and my writing took a major leap forward. – Courtney Farley

I always figured I couldn’t write fiction because I didn’t have any imagination. Helena has taught me to go to the place where memory connects with imagination. That’s been a vital revelation, helping me continue writing with greater faith.
– Nancy Obermueller
