At the Elizabeth Ayres Center for
Creative Writing, we believe that process is as important as
product in the writing endeavor. First-class creative writing
instruction acknowledges that the 'atmosphere' of a writing class
is critical to its success.
When Village Voice reporter Casee Maxfield visited the Center in 1995, she wrote the
following review of her experience for the Educational Supplement
of The Village Voice. It appered on April 18, 1995.
We believe that we have
successfully translated the ambiance of the writing workshop
observed by Ms. Maxfield into our online writing classes, which
are suitable for all genres: poetry writing, fiction writing, non-fiction
writing and screenplay writing.
SEEDS OF CHANGE
by Casee Maxfield
During college, one of my favorite courses was
"Writing Poetry and Fiction." Unlike other writing
classes I had taken, it was not crowded and impersonal, but small
and intimate, providing a supportive atmosphere for students who
were serious -- but nervous -- about writing. The

Elizabeth Ayres Center for Creative Writing also has a warm, supportive
atmosphere for beginning writers. On the night I attended, my
classmates and I worked on forming a "tree" of ideas,
with the "roots" representing preliminary ideas and the
"fruit" being the maturation of those same ideas.
Although I usually shy away from writing exercises of any kind, I
found this to be a refreshing and effective exercise for people (like
me) who have a hard time letting their creative side blossom.
The Elizabeth Ayres Center for
Creative Writing offers Writing the Wave, a creative writing program of multi-genre,
online writing workshops suitable for beginning writers and intermediate writers. Advanced
writers should contact Elizabeth Ayres directly, to inquire about private instruction.
We also offer several kinds of writing retreats.
Feel free to contact us by email or by phone
(1-800-510-1049) with any questions you may
have. We do sometimes offer other kinds of writing classes, and
we hold writing workshops in New York City and in Connecticut
from time to time, so make sure you sign up to be on our mailing
list. That way, you'll always
be informed about new Center offerings, and once a month you'll
receive new essays by Elizabeth Ayres.
